Artist Statement
I grew up in rural America and currently live in a 1850s farmhouse in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland’s Agricultural Reserve. Like those who take photos to capture a moment with a favorite grandparent they fear will not be around for much longer, I paint rural life. Open space and farmland is disappearing at an alarming rate and I paint furiously—and with much physicality, moving oils across the canvas with knives, brushes and whatever I can find—to capture and document it.
Because the outdoor, rural landscape speaks to me, I feel compelled to paint en plein air--out in the open-- to capture its essence. My hope is that viewers experience the energy and joy of the outdoors via my impasto, expressionistic mark making and are moved to value rural life and the creatures and sporting life that inhabit those green open spaces.
